Welcome to the Foundation Award in Medical Nursing

The brand new CPD course from the Medical Nursing Academy.

If you're a registered veterinary nurse, technician or paraprofessional, who wants to give even better care to their medical patients confidently and in less time, we'd love to welcome you inside.

You're a veterinary nurse who wants to give the best possible care...

But maybe right now you feel stuck.

Maybe you love caring for medical patients in your ward but feel like there are many more ways to improve their standard of care.

Maybe you're passionate about reviewing and updating your protocols, and finding better ways of doing things, but you're up against "we've always done it that way..."

Maybe you're juggling a busy ward and a million things on your to-do list, and you want a toolkit you can use to plan nursing care quickly and easily... regardless of your patient's disease.

Or maybe you're where I was ten years ago: feeling like I lacked the knowledge and confidence to give better care to my patients and frustrated that I wasn't using my skills.

And that's exactly why I created this course.

I built the Foundation Award in Medical Nursing to be the course I wish I had when I started in medicine.

To give you the foundational knowledge you need to deliver better care, with real-world examples to apply it to, and a practical skills hub to advance your hands-on nursing.

What's inside?

The Foundation Award in Medical Nursing is the first course of its kind, combining a binge-able, easily accessible on-demand core curriculum with live support and case studies.

  • Core on-demand video curriculum split into 6 modules, each covering a different body system

  • End-of-module quizzes to test your knowledge

  • Unlockable case studies so you can apply your knowledge from each module to real cases

  • Monthly live calls inside The Treatment Room, where we work through cases together in an informal, interactive way

But that's not all...

As well as the core curriculum, your year inside the course includes:

  • The Medical Nursing Community

The Medical Nursing Community is the place for all our members to hang out, support each other, discuss cases, share ideas and learn together.
It is SUCH a vibe - there has been nothing but positivity and support inside since it started in February 2023.

  • Case Study Feedback

At the end of the curriculum, you'll submit your own medical nursing case study to showcase everything you've learned, and how you're applying that to your patients.

  • And saving the best for last...

    The Practical Skills Lab

Once you've submitted your case study you'll unlock the practical skills lab - a course full of useful how-to guides and step-by-step instructions on the practical skills we can perform with our medical patients!

You'll graduate from the academy after 12 months...

With your Foundation Award in Medical Nursing.

And you'll also get a graduation certificate and badge to celebrate your achievement!

How much is it?

The course is £500. You can pay in full, or choose to spread the cost over 5 or 10 monthly payments.
Need me to invoice your practice directly? Drop me an email and we'll get it sorted!

About this course

  • Cost: £500.00
  • Modules: 6
  • Hours of CPD: 24

On top of that...

You'll put that curriculum to good use in our interactive monthly calls.

Introducing The Treatment Room - one of the things that makes this course like no other.
Every month, we'll use our Treatment Room Framework to work through a real medical case together, planning the nursing care given to that patient.
We'll also have bonus time at the end for teaching, additional case discussion, or for any questions you might have!

Got a question? Let's get them answered.

  • Who is the course for?

The academy is for qualified/registered (or equivalent) veterinary nurses, technicians and paraprofessionals.

  • How much work is involved?

Once you sign up, you've got one year to complete the course, submit your case study, and unlock and enjoy the Practical Skills Lab.
The on-demand curriculum is designed to give you all the information you need in quick, easy, bite-size lessons - without adding tons to your overflowing to-do list!
Each module should take 3-4 hours to complete.
Work through them at your own pace, as quickly or slowly as you'd like! I recommend doing one a month at minimum, as this leaves you six months to submit your case study and access the lab.

  • How is it delivered?

I pride myself on making the academy as accessible as possible.
The curriculum and the monthly treatment room calls are available in audio podcast and video formats.
The curriculum is also available as a written ebook.

  • Is the course accredited?

It will be by the time you complete it!
The academy has always been RACE approved by the Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), and the new foundation and advanced awards in medical nursing will be no exception.

  • Can my practice pay for this course?

Yes! Most students have their clinic cover the cost of their academy course via their CPD/CE budget.

  • I'm self-funding. Is there a payment plan available?

Yes! If you're self-funding, you can choose to pay over 5 or 10 monthly payments or pay the course in full. The price is the same regardless.
NB. Payment plans are only open to self-funding candidates and not to practices directly.

  • What support do I get as a student?

Creating a supportive learning environment is vitally important to me. You'll have 24/7 access to the Medical Nursing Community, where you'll have not just the support from me as your instructor, but from the rest of our academy members too.
    I check the academy community at least daily Monday-Friday, and for any queries you'd like to post or ask anonymously, you can contact me directly via email;

  • I can't attend the monthly calls live - does that matter?

Not at all! The treatment room sessions are recorded and the recordings are available to watch on-demand.

  • I'm an international nurse, technician or paraprofessional - can I still join?

Yes! We have nurses and technicians from across Europe, the USA, Canada, Asia, Australia and New Zealand inside.

Meet your instructor

Hi, I'm Laura.

Laura Jones

Laura qualified as an RVN in 2010 and has been working as a full-time Internal Medicine nurse since 2015. She is currently a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, a member of the Academy of Internal Medicine Veterinary Technicians, and Senior Medicine Nurse at a referral hospital in Southern England. She is passionate about the role of the veterinary nurse in caring for medical patients, empowering nurses to use their skills, and helping nurses provide the best possible patient care.

Don't just take it from me...

Here's what our current members have to say!

  • Suzanne B, Paraveterinarian

“A big thank you for being here for us, for all the amazing work you do for us and for giving us such a nice and safe space to feel welcome to get together.”

  • Cat M, RVN

"The medical nursing academy has been the biggest blessing in my veterinary nursing career. My love and passion for nursing has been re-ignited, and the level of support I receive from Laura as well as everyone else in the community has been incredible.
My level of nursing has benefited greatly from the academy, and it’s great to be part of a community with like-minded people, and learn from their experiences too."

  • Sarah T, RVN

"I absolutely love this academy. It is full of so many useful resources.
Its great that if you are unable to make a live meeting (or you just want to watch again) you can easily catch up later to suit you.
The fact that you can discuss cases on the forum and help and support each other makes me feel so supported, part of something good.
I can honestly say that since being a member I feel more confident and believe in myself a little bit more!
I can do this and I can do it well!!!"

  • Lidia O, RVN

"I’m so glad I signed up for the Medical Nursing Academy, it’s like being part of a little club full of fellow nerdy nurses who are passionate about their job!
Laura is so amazing at breaking down everything into helpful chunks!
I’m currently signed up for the NCert in Medical Nursing and knowing I have a community of nurses to support me makes me feel so much more confident!
I was confused about what my niche was after qualifying, but being a part of the medical nursing academy made me realise medical nursing was my passion, and it has led me to my certificate!
I can’t wait to continue learning and growing as a nurse 😄"

  • Emma M, RVN

"The academy is an absolutely brilliant platform.
It's not only filled with all sorts of useful resources, tips and Laura's infinite knowledge but it's also a place where achievements are recognised, celebrated and shared amongst the members.
You can ask questions and start a conversation that anyone can add to.
It really makes you feel empowered to be able to share your ideas without the fear of being wrong or judged.
Thank you, Laura, for creating such a safe space that values everyone's opinion."

  • Vanessa B, RVN

“Since joining the academy, I have been able to understand more about some of the complex diseases my patients present with.
I have been able to have conversations with my colleagues about their conditions and what signs to look out for and learn more about what my patients require whilst they are in the hospital and the support their owners need when they are discharged home.
The academy has helped me realise that inpatient care and medical nursing are my calling and I look forward to and enjoy every lesson and podcast episode.
Thank you, Laura for igniting my passion especially for the endocrine system which I never could get my head around before.”
